Oh summer, how quickly you’ve begun to come to an end again. August is always a sign that the dog days are nearly over. September then feels like, well, that was fun while it lasted. Punctuating that line of thinking even further is the way boys and girls have returned to school. Visions and daydreams of beachfront relaxation to a backseat and the hunger of hustle feels all the more pertinent.
For some of us, the hustle never ended. For others, motivation might just be a tricky thing altogether. No matter what the walk of life, rise and grind is a motto that we all must rep.
If Mondays don’t do it for you (or any of the day really), here are 20 motivational quotes to inspire you to rise and grind:
Try not to pay too much attention to what other people in your same field are doing. Keep focused on your own vibe and realize that your instincts and eye are what make your business unique. Looking over your shoulder is never going to be productive.

— Beyoncé Knowles-Carter
Working hard feels good. Of course it’s exhausting and stressful and causes you to miss a party or two, but at the end of the day it is so rewarding. One of the best feelings in the world is when you know that luck didn’t play a role in your success. Doing work eliminates the need for luck. I’m not lucky, I just took the stairs. And you should too.
— Lilly Singh
I have a lot of things to prove to myself. One is that I can live my life fearlessly.
— Oprah Winfrey
“Success” is such a loaded word. I would like to define it as “the way forward,” because I believe that if you make incremental progress toward your goals—small positive changes every day—you are successful.

— Oprah Winfrey
No matter where you are in life, you’ll save a lot of time by not worrying too much about what other people think about you. The earlier in your life that you can learn that, the easier the rest of it will be.
— Sophia Amoruso
You need to go from wanting to change your life to deciding to change your life. If you want to live a life you’ve never lived, you’ve got to do things you’ve never done.
— Jen Sincero

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, ‘Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?’ Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.
— Marianne Williamson
Work harder than you think you did yesterday.
— Alex Elle
Stay on your game and keep going for your dreams. The world needs that special gift that only you have.
— Marie Forleo
If we don’t change, we don’t grow. If we don’t grow, we are not really living. Growth demands a temporary surrender of security.
— Gail Sheehy
Often people attempt to live their lives backwards: they try to have more things, or more money, in order to do more of what they want so they will be happier. The way it actually works is the reverse. You must first be who you really are, then, do what you need to do, in order to have what you want.
— Margaret Young
Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one’s courage.
— Anais Nin
Your own words are the bricks and mortar of the dreams you want to realize. Your words are the greatest power you have. The words you choose and their use establish the life you experience.
— Sonia Croquette
Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it.
— Maya Angelou
